  • Duration: 9 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: San Ignacio Town, Cayo District
  • Product code: PJFPDN

This combination tour was designed for clients that want to maximize their time in the area. We do the ATM cave portion first,
break for lunch, and upon return we head straight to the Maya Temple of Xunantunich located in the beautiful Maya village of San Jose Succotz.

An early departure is necessary to make this tour possible. We depart from San Ignacio at 7:15am and are back in San Ignacio
by 4:30pm. An hour drive from San Ignacio will bring you to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, where the ATM Cave is located. A thirty minute hike through jungle trails and river crossings will bring you to the entrance of the cave.  A short swim, approximately 15 feet allows access to “Xibalba” the Maya underworld. From here you will be guided by your headlamp, navigating your way through the cave to the main plaza, where burial chambers can be found. Along the way you will learn about the sacrificial ceremonies that took place in this sacred place thousands of years ago.  Intact calcified remains, ancient artifacts and altars where Maya leaders would make blood offerings, tell the story of what once took place.

After changing into some dry clothes, we have lunch, and drive straight to Xunantunich Maya Temple. To get to the site one must cross the Mopan River by a hand cranked ferry, which then gives us access to the one mile ascent into one of Belize’s most popular sites. Here we will spend a few hours, hiking, exploring and climbing to the top of El Castillo while we learn about the history and culture of the ancient Maya. You will find yourself immersed in pristine jungle surroundings, home of howler monkeys, spider monkeys, birds and iguanas.

This combination tour is packed with adventure and fun, sight-seeing, hiking, exploring, and learning so much about these two magnificent sites and the Maya civilization that once inhabited them.
